Tips on Purchasing & Care Of
Native American Arts & Crafts

Baskets - Buying Tips

When contemplating the purchase of an Indian Basket consider following these steps:

Quality of weave- fineness and decoration

Symmetry - is the design in balance, is the baskets' shape in balance

Authenticity - are the traditional techiniques and materials being used

Origin - is the origin of the basket in question or is it verifiable either through techniques used or established provenience

Condition - damage such as discoloration or dye bleeding will adversely effect value

Age - the older the basket the more value it will generally have

Size - the larger it is the more valuable it will be in relative terms.

Rarity - again in relative terms the more rare the basket the more valuable.

Tips for Care

Avoid displaying your basket in direct sunlight, within the direct flow of an air conditioner or heater, and within an area of extreme temperature fluctuations.

Never do anything in the way of care or repair which is not reversible. For example varnish was used as a manner of preserving baskets in the past. If in doubt don't do it until speaking to an expert.

Light dusting of your basket is importent so dust it often with a feather duster or light bristle brush.

If you have considerable dirt or grime within the basket please refer it to an expert for cleaning.

Baskets with mold ore mildew should be taken to a conservator as soon as is practicle.

When your basket is in need of patching or other repair which you are not familar with please take it to someone who has experience in restoring baskets.

Never apply chemicals to your basket !

Visitor Tips

I had an American Indian Hat River curator from the Sutter Fort Museum tell me to be sure to place dried bay leaves in baskets to protect from insects. I have done this for several years and it works. Also, it certainly refreshes its fragrance.
