Pottery - Buying Tips
 
Avoid all pots with major surface faults or cracks. Clicking the rim of the pot gently with your fingernail should result in a resonant sound not a thud.
 
Blackware should be smooth, even textured and  should be black or gun metal gray.
 
Lumpiness on the interior of the pot is not desired.
 
The pot should sit square and tall.
 
:Paint lines should be straight, smooth and not lumpy.
 
Tips for evaluating
 
The more surface imperfections the lower than value.
 
The more complex the painted or incised design is the higher the value.
 
Pots with a higher degree of symmetry command more value.
 
The artists exposure will increase the value of the pot.
 
Design or polishing on the pots interior will increase its' value.
 
Traditionally made pots are much more valuable than commercially enhanced pots or non traditional pots.
 
Thinner pottery walls generally are more valuable because it takes more effort to produce.
