Beautifully done Hopi clay tile by Hopi artist Bernadette Poleahla Crook. This item measures 5.25" x 3.75". The process for making Hopi pottery is a long and arduous one. First clay has to be dug, cleaned and ground into a fine powder before the molding of the pot can began. It is at this point that the artistic expression begins, with clay in hand the potter can began to express herself. Hopi pots are made with the coil and scrape method that was taught to them by their ancestors. Starting at the base long round strands of clay are added to the pot until the proper height has been reached. Once the final shape has been achieved through scraping the pot is ready to be painted. The Hopis use yucca leafs to paint their pottery using paint that has been collected through various plants or minerals. Once the paint has been allowed to dry the firing process is next. Hopi pottery is fired outside in open air pottery using a cedar fire with the pottery in the middle and sheep dung piled up around the pots creating a kiln. This is the traditional method of firing hopi pottery.
