The Maroon Thunder and Earthquake blankets pays homage to a legend of the Yurok indians. The Yurok are original peoples living along the Klamath River in Northern California. According to Yurok legend in the beginning there was just prairie and nothing else. Their deities Thunder and Earthquake reasoned that the people would live better if there were an ocean. With this goal in mind Thunder traveled with Kingfisher to Opis to bring back the water in abalone shells. As they traveled Earthquake began to sink the land to the North end of the world behind Thunder and Kingfisher. Thunder did his part by striking down the trees and soon the water extended from the North to the South end of the world. The water was filled with seals and salmon. The prairie became ocean because of the wishes of Earthquake and Thunder. This blankets contains intricate zig zag and repeated triangular designs often found in Yurok pottery.
