The Pendleton Askutasquash blankets central image is from their archives and showcases images reminiscent of the squash blossom beadwork crafted by Native peoples of the Southwest. The blankets name itself is from the Narragansett Indians of Rhode Island and means eaten raw or uncooked. Squash is one of the three sisters (squash, corn and beans) which were the first foods domesticated by the Native Americans. The squash blossom began appearing in jewelry in the late 19th century.
