For 800 years the Hualapai (People of the tall pines) have lived in the Grand Canyon region. The Hualapai moved from the plateau to hunt and the canyon to farm wherever water flowed. The people tell of a legend of how a great flood came covering the Earth in a sea of water. Pack-i-tha-a-wi, a Hualapai hero entered the water carrying a large flint knife and a heavy wooden club. Using his club he drove the knife into the earth creating a canyon through which all the water ran into the Sea of Sunset. The Sun, who was grateful, shone down on Pack-i-tha-q-wis canyon baking the creating the various layers of color today seen in the Grand Canyon including Cedar Mountain. On the southeastern side of the Grand Canyon Cedar Mountain rises over 7000 feet into the air and is comprised of the Moenkopi formation.
