Pendleton's 2005 addition to the
Legendary Collection is Celebrate the Horse! With the arrival of the Spanish
in the late 1600's came the horse. Perhaps no other single event changed the
lives of Native Americans more than the introduction of the horse. They became
expert riders and used their new found skills to protect their territory, herd
sheep, game hunting and for seasonal migration. While the Pueblo Indians who first had the horse
were largely unaffected by its introduction they used it as barter material with
the Plains Indians. Probably no group underwent a greater change than they.
Their marriage with the horse gave them great mobility and instantly changed
their way of life.In many Native societies the measure of a
families wealth was how many horses were owned. The horse became a prized and
honored possession to many Native Americans as well as a companion and friend.
