Beargrass, called "yai" by the Native tribes of the Columbia River, grows in the western mountains, blooming with cones of star-shaped flowers every five to seven years. This rare grass is key to the basketry of the Columbia River tribes. Its scientific name, Xerophyllum tenax, means the dry leaf that holds fast. Skilled Native weavers have transformed beargrass into beautiful wedding hats, berry baskets, and tightly woven vessels used to carry water and cook food. Families lovingly preserve traditional baskets for centuries, embodying the spirit of Naknuwisha to care for something so precious, it consumes you. Unnapped.
