For thousands of years the Pueblo people in the Southwest have worshiped in sunken dwellings called Kivas. Kivas feature a hole in the north part of the chamber called the sipapu which represents man’s place of emergence from the underworld. Today Kivas are still built underground. The Kiva blanket pattern represents the steps which signify the physical and spiritual paths in and out of the Kiva. Modern Hopi people still gather in their Kivas to worship together and rejuvenate their spirits.
