The Yavapai, or People of the Sun, lived long ago in central Arizona. Yavapai weavers made baskets that were so tightly woven, they could hold water. These light yet strong baskets were as beautiful as they were useful for storage, transport, even cooking. Basket making is similar to jacquard weaving, with strands of many colors creating vivid patterns. Diamond shapes and patterned bands work together to reflect the intricate and timeless art of Yavapai basketry
