Gerald was born with the last name of Honwytewa but once initiated into the Hopi men’s society he was given his “adult name” of Lomaventema. George is a member of the Bear Clan of Shungopavi Village which is on the Hopi mesas in Northern Arizona. He learned silversmithing by watching his father Jerry Honwytewa and by attending the Hopi Silver Guild.
Later in his career he learned the art of tufa casting which is the process of casting jewelry using forms carved into volcanic ash. Today Gerald’s jewelry incorporates both the tufa casting and overlay techiniques and also include turquoise and other stones.
Gerald has attended shows as far away as Japan and has won many awards for his artwork. His jewelry is very unique and clearly expresses his technical expertise.
